Background

As a leading oil and gas training institution in Sarawak, IKM Bintulu plays a vital role in producing technical skills personnel to meet high demand of oil and gas industry.

The plant operation program is aimed to train students to become competence plant operator or panelman. It is a dynamic platform to provide students with hands-on experience with the most comprehensive and up-to-date training equipment and facilities.  

One of the courses offered on semester 2 is Process Plant and Equipment Start Up where students will be able to explain and perform the start-up procedure of a plant. Not only focusing on the in-class training, mode of training is elevated to an exclusive sharing session by the industrial expert on Plant Start Up.

Objectives

Two key personnel on plant start up from Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd. were invited to share their experience with the trainees. Among the objectives of the program are:

·         To strengthen student’s knowledge on plant start up

·         To inspire students on the benefit of working with our national oil company

·         To establish corporate affair with oil and gas industry

Target Group:

All lecturers in Certificate in Process Plant Operation Engineering Technology Program

18 students from semester 1 of Certificate in Process Plant Operation Engineering Technology Program

20 students from semester 2 of Certificate in Process Plant Operation Engineering Technology Program

Program implementation

The Visiting Industrial Expert on Plant Start Up program was conducted in an interactive two hours sharing session by the Encik Muhammad Hafiz Maamor, Shutdown Superintendent and Encik Iskandar A Khalek, Shift Superintendent from Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd.Students were very excited to know how the start up procedures is carried out in a real plant. Among the questions being raised by the students are:

·         What is the cost of the plant start up, what happened if it is delayed?

·         What are the risks, where there any incident happened during plant start up?

·         How do you manage the start up in a big plant like MLNG?

The Q&A session was dragged and we were so lucky to have Encik Hafiz and Encik Iskandar who were so patient to answers all the curious and enthusiastic students.

Program Achievement

The program has benefits the students in a way that they gain upper hand knowledge in plant start up procedures. The sharing session is also very relevant to the course offered where the content shared is almost 80 % similar to the theory syllabus.

Closure

Thank you to IKM Bintulu management in supporting this program and special thanks to MLNG Sdn. Bhd. for the cooperation to involve in this program. We hope that this initiative can be a continuous program as the Process Plant and Equipment Start Up course is offered every semester.
